Royal Opera House Spring Season 2013 revs up

So that's how you play Consequences on Photoshop. This random jumble of ill-assorted imagery is the ROH's regrettably accurate depiction of their ragbag spring season, which opens for booking on 5 December (Friends) and 15 January (public).

First up is a double-cast rerun of David McVicar’s Die Zauberflöte, in which the main novelty will be a Woman in the pit, Julia Jones. Ekaterina Siurina and Charles Castronovo are the young couple in the April cast, and Christopher Maltman returns as Papageno. In the May cast, Sophie Bevan and Andrew Staples are joined by Simon Keenlyside. They may all fade beside the thrilling Albina Shagimuratova (listen below), making her ROH debut as Queen of the Night. Hottest show of the season is Nicholas Hytner's returning Don Carlo, with Pappano conducting. Put the two ticket max down to the Jonas Kaufmann effect. Fabulous Ferruccio Furlanetto is back as King Philip, and Mariusz Kwiecien makes a surprising role debut as Posa (we shall see). Anja Harteros may or may not turn up.
We are warned that John Fulljames' hastily put together new production of La donna del lago (replacing the previously-contracted and legendarily dreadful Paris version) is low on budget. But it scores high on stars. Joyce DiDonato is the donna, and it might be the first time Colin Lee has appeared on the same stage as some guy the ROH call 'Juan Flórez'.
Finally, in June there's a new Richard Jones production of Britten’s Gloriana, which is performed only rarely for a reason. Anyone who didn't get their fill of Susan Bullock in the Ring cycle will be thrilled, but I'm finding it hard to work up much enthusiasm myself.
As usual, there are several educational evenings as well. The highlights are inevitably shown on the website eventually, so it's hard to recommend forking out for the live events. However one that stands out is the 1 May presentation on the forthcoming King Roger. The show itself isn't for a couple of years, and it's unusual (possibly unprecedented) for the secretive ROH to allow the public a glimpse of the creative process so early on.  'Kasper' (surname apparently dropped Rihanna-style) presents. A good opportunity perhaps to ask exactly what the ROH is doing about establishing the artistic identity it so desperately lacks at present.
By the way, a boring warning. Some changes the ROH made last week have caused a few users (including me) to receive DNS error messages when trying to access the website. I have no idea why it's taking them so long to resolve what is a relatively simple problem, but until they do, you should be able to get in on http://54.247.171.89 instead. This will raise a 'security certificate error' message, which you can ignore. If you're not comfortable doing this, then try a different internet connection (via a different ISP), as the problem is ISP-specific.

Pianists born after 15 January 1983 can now apply for the 2013 competition.
Application deadline: 15 January 2013.

To start with the online application procedure, candidates first have to create an account on this website in the right-hand column. Once connected to this account, they can begin to fill out the application form in the submenu 'My applications'. The application form contains two parts, one for administrative data and one for the programme. More information about the repertoire and application requirements are available in the rules of the piano competition.

The first round and the semi-final of this 18th piano session will take place from 6 until 18 May in Brussels at Flagey, with the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie under the baton of Michael Hofstetter. The finalists will perform with the National Orchestra of Belgium directed by Marin Alsop, from 27 May until June 1st at the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts. In June, a series of laureates’ concerts throughout Belgium is scheduled.

MUSIC MARATHON: MISSIE VOLBRACHT!

Van 18 t.e.m. 24 november draaide BOZAR op het razende tempo van de Music Marathon. Grote sterren als Cecilia Bartoli, Nelson Freire, Leif Ove Andsnes en Antonio Pappano passeerden de revue tijdens deze hoogmis van de klassieke muziek. Maar liefst 15.000 muziekliefhebbers genoten van concerten, inleidingen, ontmoetingen, signeersessies, documentaires en open repetities.

Het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten vormde een week lang het kloppende hart van de klassieke muziek in België.  De uitzonderlijk rijke affiche met internationale topnamen in een gevarieerd programma wist het publiek te overtuigen, getuige de uitverkochte zalen en staande ovaties.

Het toegankelijk maken van klassieke muziek voor een breed publiek is één van de belangrijkste missies van BOZAR. De Music Marathon valt niet toevallig in het seizoen 2012-2013, waarin onder de naam LOVE LIVE sterk ingezet wordt op publieksparticipatie, uitwisseling en educatie. Melomanen, liefhebbers en nieuwkomers namen niet alleen deel aan de concerten, maar ook aan de verschillende omkaderende en verdiepende activiteiten.

De Music Marathon, met zijn inleidingen, signeersessies, open repetities en unieke meet & greets met sterren zoals Cecilia Bartoli, Nelson Freire, Alice Sara Ott en Stefan Blunier, werd bijzonder gesmaakt door jong en oud. Zo kon een klas slechthorende jongeren kennismaken met het gevoel van muziek via het project “Feel the Music” van pianist Leif Ove Andsnes en het Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Enkele gelukkigen  kregen een blik achter de schermen en mochten de open repetitie van het Filharmonisch Orkest van Sint-Petersburg met Nelson Freire bijwonen. De twee meisjes die een ontmoeting wonnen met Cecilia Bartoli, beleefden een onvergetelijke avond. Al deze persoonlijke ervaringen en de rechtstreekse uitwisselingen tussen de artiesten en het publiek zijn de kern van het succes van de Music Marathon.

De Marathon leefde ook online: de equipe van BOZAR TV publiceerde dagelijks interviews en reportages achter de schermen. Ook verschillende bloggers volgden het evenement van dag tot dag, met posts op hun blog,  de website van BOZAR en de Facebookpagina van BOZAR MUSIC. Paul Dujardin: Met de MUSIC MARATHON slaagde BOZAR met verve in zijn opzet om klassieke muziek toegankelijk te maken voor een breder publiek. Ik ben er trots op dat BOZAR volop zijn rol gespeeld heeft van ‘ontmoetingsplaats voor de kunsten’, want met de tentoonstellingen, wereldmuziekconcerten, theatervoorstellingen en evenementen die deze week eveneens op het programma stonden, verwelkomden we maar liefst 30 000 bezoekers. De ervaring van de Music Marathon wordt vast en zeker herhaald!
